Understanding and Interpreting the Readings

The Principles of Interpretation: Moving Lines, Changing Lines, Static Lines

The lines of a hexagram, whether moving (changing) or static, form the basis for interpreting an I Ching reading. Static lines offer insight into the overall situation or the stable aspects of it, while moving (changing) lines highlight areas of change, flux, or particular significance.

  • Moving (Changing) Lines: These lines indicate a change from Yin to Yang or vice versa. They symbolize a moment of transformation in the situation. Each changing line comes with a specific text that provides guidance on this change.

  • Static Lines: Static lines are those that stay as they are, either as a Yin line (- -) or a Yang line (---). These lines represent stable, unchanging aspects of the situation.

How to Read Changing Lines

When  you receive a hexagram with one or more changing lines (represented by the values of 6 or 9), these changing lines provide additional insight into your question. Here's how to read them:

  1. First, read the text associated with the original hexagram in its entirety. This gives you a general overview of the answer to your question.

  2. Next, read the specific text associated with each changing line. Changing lines are read from the bottom up, so start with the lowest one if you have more than one. The texts for the changing lines provide specific advice or information about the situation at hand.

  3. After you've noted the guidance given by each changing line, "change" these lines to their opposites to create a new hexagram:

    • A 6 (old yin, broken line with a dot) changes into a 7 (young yang, solid line).

    • A 9 (old yang, solid line with a dot) changes into an 8 (young yin, broken line).

  4. Look up this second hexagram in the I Ching. This hexagram can be read as the outcome or resolution of the situation you asked about - it shows what the situation is moving towards, or how it might evolve if the advice of the changing lines is followed.

In summary, the first hexagram and the changing lines represent the current situation and the action needed, while the second hexagram shows the potential outcome or resolution. This dynamic view of change is at the heart of the philosophy of the I Ching.

As with all I Ching readings, these interpretations should be considered in relation to your question and your personal circumstances. The I Ching is a tool for guidance and reflection, not fixed predictions.

Understanding and Interpreting the Casting Results

Interpreting the casting results involves reading the hexagram(s) generated and consulting the relevant texts in the I Ching. If there are no changing lines, you will read the text for the hexagram generated. If there are changing lines, you will read the specific line texts, and the hexagram will also change into a second hexagram.

Start with the Judgment of the original hexagram, then read the Image, providing overall context for the situation. Next, read the texts for any changing lines, offering specific insights and actions to consider. Finally, if a second hexagram was generated, read its Judgment and Image, providing additional context and pointing to potential future developments.

Remember, the I Ching is not simply predicting the future, but providing guidance on how to best navigate the current situation and potential future changes.

The Role of Personal Intuition in Interpretation

While the I Ching provides a framework for understanding the patterns of change, the ultimate interpretation of an I Ching reading depends on the individual's intuition and discernment. The same hexagram or line can have different meanings in different contexts, and it's up to the individual to intuitively grasp what is most relevant to their situation. Cultivating this sense of intuition can be aided by meditation, journaling, and regular practice with the I Ching.
